Expand A Kind Gesture

Sometimes people surprise you. I mean really surprise you... surprise you with such kindness and generosity that you just get taken aback.

I went to my work's Christmas party last Friday. It was a pretty good time with good hors d'oeuvres, a mostly-open bar, and live music courtesy of some guys at work (including Cameron). Before the music started, the owner of the company announced our annual employee awards, where different people are honored in different categories (best in management, best in development, best in support, etc). I didn't win anything, but supposedly some pals at work voted for me -- that was nice of them. I voted for my pals too -- the guy I voted as best developer (Dave) won as well.

Fast forward to today, when I'm in my office, minding my own business, and in comes Dave. He tells me that he thought it was unfair that they only gave awards to two winners per category this year, when normally it's 3. Then he did something amazing. He gave me a $50 GameStop gift card, which probably amounts to 1/2 of his winnings after taxes. His act of good will had me floored, I didn't really know what to say. I thanked him as best I knew how, and then in typical me-fashion, I made some mean joke. I need to work on that whole social thing.

I feel like I should pay it forward now. It felt nice to be recognized and rewarded.
